Standby & Hibernate stopped working

Using XP Home Edition with SP2 on an HP laptop.
Last night I thought I had put it in standby by using
"Start | Turn off Computer |Stand By" which I had done many times
before. Some hours later I noticed it was still on, and would not
respond to the on/off key, which in the past put it in hibernation. A
very long press of the on/off button eventuall shut it down. his
morning, neither Standby nor hibernate works. A Google search found
ons suggestion that I set modem properties to uncheck
[] Allow this device to bring... out of standby". It is already
unchecked.

What else affects the ability to stand by?

Video drivers.
You may have downloaded an "improved" video driver as part of a Windows
Update. You can download a current video driver from the video card
manufacturer.

In addition to video drivers, other software drivers can affect this.
Have you installed any new hardware/software?

Nothing new, but I ran disk cleanup and got rid of a lot of temp
files.Could I have deleted something important? No activity relating
to video afaik.

A couple of error messages would be helpful, but the function just
does nothing.

OK, it just started working again. I guess it is magic. Hmmm.

I wouldn't expect disk cleanup to cause problems. Lol...the computer
gods have bit again. Hope it stays working.

Hi,

Does your reg cleaner have an undo function? Those utilities tend to do more
damage in WinXP than good and should be avoided.

You could always try the procedure here:
