standard vga adapter

I went to install the newest ATi drivers in XP, and followed their unistall
directions to the letter, when Windows rebooted it said it found a new
standard vga adapter and was going t o install the drivers, it asked whether
to search for and install the drivers, I checked the yes box to let it search
for the drivers, but it couldn't find the drivers to install the standard vga
adapter. What files will it be looking for, and where should they be
located. I feel that when uninstalling the ATi drivers it might have removed
other drivers as well.

Looking to install vga.sys a standard MS file. The file would be
located on the XP CD.

ATI install directions _instruct you to cancel_ when windows tries to install
drivers on reboot.
