The max resolution of the "Standard Monitor" in WinXP is 1024 x 768. For
various reasons I need to increase this for a monitor which doesn't support
plug and play.

The motherboard is more than capable of 1600 x 1200 resolution and works
well with this resolution with another monitor.

The monitor works well in a Win98 system at this resolution.

Is there a way I can increase the resolution of the "Default Monitor" to
fool the
graphics adaptor to output a higher resolution?

Try updated graphics drivers??
What driver is Windows 98 using for the monitor? You could try finding an
updated version of that?

More questions than answers... sorry :D

You can show all modes and select manually, should be a
check box in display properties.

The graphics chipset is an SIS one. When a monitor of lower resolution than
the set resolution is used, the display becomes a "panned" one according to
where the mouse is. In other words the monitor resolution is 1024 x 768 but
the screen resolution is 1600 x 1200 where only a portion can be seen at a
time.

I am using updated drivers.

The Win98 machine is a very old PC and only used it to make sure the monitor
worked!

Go to the webite of the monitor's manufacturer and get the .inf file
for the monitor. Install it and then you should be able to select the
res you wish.
