Stand By-Hibernation button hidden

when I click "turn off computer" I have my three buttons "Stand By" "Turn
Off" "Restart" however my stand by hibernation button is shaded and not
accessible. When I close the lid on my notebook it will not stand by either,
I first noticed this problem after connecting an external flat screen
monitor. both my notebook and external monitor are IBM brand.

any help would be great.
