Stale PST File

B

Brian H

I've got a stale PST file associated with my hotmail accout. My regular POP account works fine, but the hotmail hasn't updated in weeks and when I try to close the hotmail account outlook comes back with an error message

"The operation fail. An object couldn't be found"

Found the associated pst file and it seems to be there, here is what I've tried

1. renaming the pst file. Outlook then complains it can't find the associated pst file and doesn't get me any further

2. deleting all references in the to the hotmail account in my registry table (this was something some an MVP suggested – no luck)

3. running the detect and repair option – no joy

4. using the data management file – error return that an object can't be found and then displays nothing in the following dialog box

5. can't create a new profile – don't have the permissions and the IT doesn't support outlook even though they install office on every machine –no help

6. Try to create a new hotmail account – total confusion

What is this missing object? Any ideas would be appreciated, thx.

Thanks, although I'm not sure what you mean "delete the account from my profile" where would I do that?

Then your mail profile has become corrupted. You should create a new profile
(do not copy it);
Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show Profiles

To access your current pst-file in the new profile;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts...-> button Next-> use the dropdownlist below

Thanks that was a big help, almost got me back to normal. The one remaining issue was that while I could open and get mail using the old outlook configuration, there was a extra Personal Folders that couldn't be close. So I went through all the trouble to move all the items from one set of folders to another. Then I was able to close the old personal folder out. Thanks again for the help
