Sreen/Desktop Refresh

Using Windows XP Home SP1.

Quite often when double clicking a file or folder my "desktop" freezes
(Crtl+Alt+Delete gets me back out) or alternatively all my desktop icons
disappear and then desktop refreshes itself and puts me back to where I
started (before trying to open a file or folder)! What's happening and how
do I fix it?

p.s. I have updated and run my AV program and also, AdAware and Spybot.
These have not solved the "problem".

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

May the computer is still trying to load other programs or is bust
hence the slow reponse. Load MSCONFIG and see if the programs shown
are all needed on startup.
