Squashed up text

Hello, forgive my lack of technical savvy or terminology but here is my
problem.

I opened my 2007 powerpoint to create a new presentation. No matter whether
I select a blank document or a template all of the text is "squashed up". I
have tired to go in and expand the character spacing but it really makes
almost no difference and you can't "grab on to the text to delete it".

Seeing as this is happening with prefilled template and all blanks (before I
have even typed anything there is something in there "squashed up", can
anyone tell me what I may have accidentally done in the presets and how to
fix it?
