They emailed me recently and offered Final Fantasy VII for a fiver and stated it will run ok in Win 7.

I bought it, downloaded it, entered code number and started it.

It didn't work in Win 7.

Nor would it work in Win XP.

So I contacted Square Enix support and explained my problem, saying also that under their rules and regs I have a fortnight to claim a refund and I'd like to do so.

They emailed me asking for a zipped file containing msinfo information and dxdiag information, so I done that and emailed them the file to the email address they gave me.

It bounced. Tried again, email bounced again.

So have replied to the email they sent me and attached zip file. Watch this space.

But here's the real warning, as crappy as the above might seem, this is worse. When contacting Square Enix (based in Germany, I do believe) I used an email address I have rarely used, I've never been spammed on this address.

Since contacting Square Enix with that email address I have received a lot of spam to it, including the really stupid and annoying ones like meds, viagra, iffy software and make your willy bigger stuff.

So, deal with Square Enix at your peril. I'm beginning to think - and accept - that I will never play Final Fantasy VII and I've lost five pounds cash sterling.

I really could do without this crap.

Which just seems to be an automated reply. All they are asking for there are what they asked for in my first reply from them. They have already had all that information.

I don't hold out high hopes for a refund.

I do hold out high hopes for putting Square Enix permanently on my **** list.

Yep a long and drawn out automated reply, there should be nothing stopping them from issuing you a refund now
Stalling tactics..Jokers eh!

Glad I don't play games anymore and have hassles like this, only games I play now are what I download for free onto my Android Tablet, if I don't like them or they don't work I simply delete them!

Heres fingers crossed Flopp's

And it goes on and on and on...

Received today:

Regarding your refund request for FINAL FANTASY VII we have found that FINAL FANTASY VII has been installed and activated twice on your account.

We would ask you to please confirm if you still wish to return FINAL FANTASY VII and if so please provide a valid reason for this.

You would also have to manually revoke both licenses before a refund could be considered by using the run box (Windows Key + R) type in: "C:\program files (x86)\Square Enix\final fantasy VII\FF7_Launcher.exe" /revoke FINAL FANTASY VII comes with three available licenses.

In addition we would also still need the payment method you used to purchase FINAL FANTASY VII.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. We look forward to hearing back from you and being able to solve your query.

Kind regards,

My reply:

If you had bothered to read the correspondence regarding my refund claim you would understand why I tried to activate the game twice. Firstly, it would not work within a Windows 7 64 Bit installation so I then tried the game on a different computer running Windows XP 32 Bit where it wouldn't work either. Doesn't matter how many times I've tried to activate it, the game doesn't work so it's worthless to me. I confirm that yes I do wish to return Final Fantasy VII and the valid reason for this is that the game does not work, do you really have to ask this after all the former correspondence between myself and Square Enix?

I can confirm that my download file for Final Fantasy VII has now been deleted from both computers concerned along with any files and folders and registry entries pertaining to the game. I paid for this non-working game via Paypal. My Paypal ID is ***********************. It seems to me you are just spinning this process out in an effort to try and keep the £4.99 I paid for this non-working game and I would appreciate it if you would make the refund to my Paypal account right now and stop wasting my time asking for information which you've now received several times.

More:

Thank you for contacting the Square Enix Support Centre.

We are very sorry to hear that you are still having issues with the game.

Unfortunately, your copy of the game has been successfully activated twice. The activations will need to be revoked before a refund can be issued. If you have uninstalled the game you will need to reinstall it and run the revocation steps previously provided.

We can also help get the game to run on your computers if you would still wish to play the game, as it is highly likely the problem was caused by a login issue.

We do sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I'm starting to lose my rag now and feel like telling Square Enix to put my fiver where the sun don't shine but that's maybe what they want, the conniving little cheapskates. My reply:

On my Windows 7 machine I use a small SSD drive for the OS and all my games are installed on a 2Tb SATA drive labelled 'G'. Final Fantasy VII has been reinstalled to it's original location on drive G in a folder 'Final Fantasy VII' so therefore your revoke licence text path with the 'C' drive doesn't work. Care to give me the path for the licence revoke from my G drive, you gurus at technical support? Tell me, just why do I have to 'revoke the licence'? Those are your rules, not mine. I see this as me buying a rubbish product from you and you trying to get out of giving me a refund. A product that doesn't work is no good to me, I don't want your licence and I'm not going to use it. I have a lot of games, my Steam folder alone is 800Gb and that means I've spent a lot of money on games. You owe me £4.99. Not a lot, but it's still £4.99. You are giving me lots of bother and wasting my time and all I'm doing is making a simple request. LET ME SAY THIS - Never ever again will I buy one of your products, not for my computer and neither for my Xbox 360, you are a truly awful company to deal with. I think it's fair for me to spread the word about how bad you are, I have started two threads at two online forums where there are lots of gamers. Not a lot of potential customers for you I suppose but I hope the word will spread. If you don't refund me at the end of all this time wasting for me I am going to consult my solicitor.

Yep, I know, probably wrong but soon I am going to explode

Hi folks, making this post is going to hurt.

To cut to the quick - this game now works, and it probably worked right from the start. But it has the most peculiar keyboard controls I've ever seen. At the start of the game you get a screen that says 'New Game?' and 'Continue?', the arrow keys change between the options.

I pressed enter, space, tab, left mouse, right mouse. caps lock, just about all the keys I could think of to start the game and when it wouldn't start I started this thread.

So today, just out of curiosity, I tried to start the game again and arrived at the same point. Started task manager to exit and came to the game's menu screen screen so just for a change I clicked Options/keyboard and for the first time came to the control menu.

And in that menu, for the keyboard, is: OK = x. I pressed x and the game started. Doh

Very odd set of commands, v is for the menu and it also uses home/end/insert/pgup/pgdn.

So I played the game to the first save point and it's actually quite good and here's the odd thing - I've played this game before. It's from 1997 and I hadn't had a computer very long then, possibly still a 386, but I did have this game, I remember it. Haven't a clue where it went from all those years ago.

So, there we go, own up time, egg on my face but it would have helped if they'd made the menu more easily accessible and chose some more sensible controls. The Xbox controller also works well with this game.

I think after all my ranting at Square Enix I am going to email them and explain and apologise.
