Is it essential to download and pay for software to combat this spyware
stuff?and if so can you recommend a spyware company i could use, thanks garvan

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (personal free version)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the signature files (pattern files) by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt194.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same
directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full
Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB)

8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point
10) Please report back your results

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

All of these are free

Sometimes, when you remove malware it will stop your TCP/IP
stack from working (Internet connection).
Winsock or LSP-fix will correct the problem,Download first.
Note to anyone using NOD32 Anti-Virus software,Do Not delete the
"imon.dll" this fix reports,That is your e/mail scanning engine.

YES-You need more than 1 malware program,I use all of these.

Using all of the following programs is neither mad nor excessive. They all do
things a little differently and when one misses spyware\adware the other may
pick it up. The following are all free and ones I use every day.
SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware, Bulldog,
IDBlaster, XPAntispy, BHODemon, and HijackThis. I absolutely never get
spyware\adware any more and with the installation of SP2 I no longer needed
my free pop-up blocker. For me there is no such thing as "too" much
protection, the same goes for virus protection.

I meant no offense. It seems to me that we've blown this way, way out of
proportion to the actual danger or inconvenience. I run Ad-aware, Spybot
S&D and Spyblaster. I toyed with the idea of adding SpyGuard but thought
it somewhat excessive. I'm also not receiving any spyware "of which I'm
aware." Now you say you are also not receiving any spyware, but the fact
remains, that like me you simply don't know whether this is the case or
not. Your dozen + tools tell you all is well. My three tools tell me the
same. The computer hums along quite smoothly and quickly and I've no
reason to believe that I'm infected. It just seems that we're padlocking
the padlocks and then padlocking the padlocks which are padlocking the
padlocks. I'm curious: how much time do you spend on these daily checks?
What dangers do you believe you are avoiding having more than the
recommended Ad-aware and Spybot?

I would also add an enhance firewall software like Zone Alarm Free. With
this software, you can lock down all Internet access and thus locate any
spywares that might try to slip out info from your system. SP2's firewall
is still lame.

I agree. I've used ZA for the past three years now... gone from free to
Pro and back to free. I can't imagine spending the time to run a dozen
or more program in the vain hope of catching some errant piece of
spyware somehow missed by Spybot or Ad-aware.

I don't use any of that crap and have had no problems. All depends on how
much someone knows about securing a computer.

I don't know that I would call it crap, but using more than a dozen
programs on a daily basis with the fear that some errant piece of
spyware may have dodged Ad-aware, Spybot and Spyblaster seems to be not
only overkill but downright obsessive-compulsive. The poster mentioned
that there was no such thing as too much protection. Well.. I would
argue that this is really pushing the believability ticket here. Why not
just shut the computer off and pull the telephone line/cable/dish? I've
more important things to do, like washing my hands a dozen times an hour
lest germs that might inadvertantly be picked up, infect me. :p

I don't use all of these everyday,about once a week I'll use 2 or 3 different
ones.

If you practice good computing habits, you don't get spyware. I
haven't had spyware on my computer for years.

Even so, it is not a bad idea to run AdAware now and then, just to
see if anything managed to sneak onto your harddrive. It's free.
