Get a Toshiba, any model you want... I have an old Satellite (came with
Windows 95b) that's still working. SCSI optical drives, floppy drive, and
modems are ALL still working.

790 /what/?! Dollars, Euros or pounds sterling, no, it should not.
Australian, Canadian or NZ dollars then, possibly, yes.

want to purchase a dell anymore, have you any recommendations on

When I stated that, I didn't realise it was Dell. I had an old Optiplex
GX150 (actually, it was my father's) that I wanted to upgrade as much as I
possibly could (P3 1.2GHz and 512MB). But either the motherboard died, or
the PSU did (actually, I suspected it was both) and, because Optiplexes are
low form factor, I couldn't purchase standard parts and Dell wanted over
£500 to replace them. Obviously, because of the age of the system, it wasn't
worth it, and I ended up building them (my parents) a Shuttle for less than
Dell wanted to replace the motherboard and PSU (which, incidentally, would
have worked out at around €760, not much less than you were charged for a
replacement screen).

Just a friendly FYI, you need to add spaces between punctuation too, not
just words.

As for brands, it all depends on what you're wanting to do and how much
you're willing to spend. My uncle is very happy with his Toshiba (my cousins
both have Dells and have had no problems with them but, understandably, you
don't want another Dell). He spent more on it than he would have done had he
been spending his own money (it was a company purchase) then, when he left,
they gifted it to him (it was only about four months old).

As I said, it depends very much on price and what you want to use it for.
Basic tasks, you could spend as little as £500 (or even less) but if you
want a 'desktop replacement' (but I still maintain that there is no such
thing) you could be looking to spend five or six times that.

I would also suggest a Dell. If you want an extremely slow laptop with
numerous problems, buy an IBM Thinkpad T41 or an HP.

I had an HP desktop that came with a really messed up restore disk that was
bundled with all kinds of crap. I formatted the hard disk, put an OEM XP
Home on it and now it works wonderfully.

Alias

I constantly have to reinstall from those dumb bundled discs. Thank God we
are finally getting the full XP Pro disc so I don't have to deal with that or
lost discs. Obviously the problems associated with most laptops are as a
result of the manufacturers OEM version of XP. Dell has always seemed to get
that part down in all of their products. I recently reinstalled ME on 4
Dimension 4100 desktops. I could not believe how stable and fast they were.
Even though they have gone with substandard components at times, Dell seems
to have the highest quality available for off the shelf PCs.

NO it's not. Once the screen goes bad it's time for a new laptop unless
one has a local, cheap source/repair shop that has a nice junkyard.

i have an old toshiba sat pro w/ 95 until by friend messed up the system
files Toshiba highlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy rec. get that or a dell i have a dell
inspiron 1100 works perfectly and use it for every last thing you use it for.
one thing you will want if you are doing webpage design like me get at least
512mb or memory
