If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to
JRE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively
being exploited.
It is possible that is how you got infected with malware.
Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of
Sun Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE Version 5.0
Update 6
be installed ASAP.
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
It is suggested that you execute the following tool in Normal Mode then in
Safe Mode.
Download SmitFraud.exe from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/SmitFraud.exe
Execute; SmitFraud.exe { Note: You must accept the default of
C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to
go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.
Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }
A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be
generated. At the
end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or
Internet Explorer).
It is suggested that you move the report out of c:\mcafee before
performing another scan.
Please Copy and Paste the contents of the HTML Log file;
C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML in your
reply.

| Hi David,
| After reading, with interest, your mention of the Sun Java
| download.....I checked my machine and am unsure what Java package I
have, if
| any. There are many references to 'Java', but, not "Sun". I have a
Java
| folder in Windows, it contains subfolders such as 'classes', 'packages',
| 'trustlib', etc. I am running XP Home SP2, haven't added any java
packages
| (that I am aware of). I do use sites that incorporate javascript, i.e.
the
| Weather, and these display properly. Is the Sun Java something I should
| consider??....and if so, does anything I have at this time need to be
| removed before installing the one you reference?? Thank you.
| Heirloom, old and just curious

It isn't hard to determine.
You can start with; start --> settings --> control panel --> Add/Remove
Programs
You can also look in;
C:\Program Files\Java
There should only be ONE directory below the above such as; jre1.5.0_06
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06

| Dave,
| I had already done the things you mentioned......nothing related to
Java
| in the Add/Remove and nothing under Program Files. The only entry is in
| J:\Windows\Java\ with the subfolders previously mentioned. I am
reluctant
| to dl'd and install the Sun Java package for fear of conflict with
whatever
| is currently on the machine.......I guess the best course would be to
leave
| well enough alone? or am I putting myself in the crosshairs of an
exploit?
| I appreciate your responses, thank you.

Then you are NOT using Sun Java, per se, but the version of Sun Java OEM'd
to Microsoft and
is included with the OS.
David H. Lipman said:You remove nothing. The OS will give you a choice of either Microsoft's version of Java or
the Sun Java installed version by selecting "Set Program Access and Defaults" from the Start
Menu. Once you install Sun Java it will automatically be defaulted to the Sun Java version.

| Have made use of your advice in the past so I do not like to 'nit pick'
but
| I am sure you are aware of http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

Yes... I am fully aware that Microsoft violated the terms of agreement in
their use of Sun
Java and was ultimately sued by Sun and Microsoft rightfully lost the
case. Thus MS has to
phase out the use of their application of Sun Java. Only security related
updates at this
time.
I'm sorry... I don't see the relevance to this discussion.
