Spyware removal and DSL dial-up failure

My client's machine had 20+ varients of Adware which I
was able to remove via Norton AntiVirus. Needless to say
most of it was removed manually.
I was able to get the system to working order and
installed sp2.
Upon reboot the system showed 'Error: Opening port' Error
769: the specified defined ISP not reachable...
I tried deleating and adding the network connection,
uninstalled sp2(which may or may not be the issue) and am
at a loss as to the next step.
I tried earlier recommendations for defining the Firewall
in Windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842242 but was
unsuccessful.
Please advise.

I think if I every found a computer with that much
malware, I would just reformat.

Maybe not what you wanted to hear but I would be worried
that I'd never be sure it was 100% right after all that.

Your client? You are asking us for advice that will allow you to charge
someone?
Hmmmm

I've had two clients recently who had over 2500 files affected by
spyware/malware (one 2509 and the other over 3000). 20+ variants is nothing
compared to these two PCs. Both had also been infected with viruses which
were removed as well. In neither case did I have to reformat and reinstall.

20+ is nothing. On average, I usually find between 20 and 70 on
customer computers that are "carefull" and experiencing no problems
(service call was for another reason). Worst cases had 1000+ spyware
plus viruses. So far, no re-install necessary.
