Spyware Program

So your convinced that linux does not need any anti-virus, anti-spyware.
The experts don't agree with you.

Considering you quoted as many "experts" as you gave reasons for
"upgrading" from XP to Sight, your reply, as usual, is null and void.

Note, I have a hard firewall enabled with Ubuntu through an Edimax router.

This may be true in theory, but till the time that the internet mafia
discovers Linux, we will be quite safe.

Considering the fact that the majority of the Internet is running on Linux
now, I'm sure "they" have discovered Linux. The problem they're having is
that the can't propagate their malware through Linux like is so easy to do
through Windoze. We are safe, because Linux is safe.
I am very happy with my Mandriva
Linux without any antivirus/spyware programs. Some time ago someone
used my credit car data after I had used the card via Windows. This
meant that I had to remove the whole Windows partition in order to
remove the rootkit or whatever it was that my antivirus/antispyware
could not find, and spend two days reinstalling everything. Since then I
do my financial business via Linux (dual boot). Since a few months I
have removed all antivirus/spyware from my Windows partition and Windows
reacts fast again. It is simply no longer connected to the internet!!

Considering a 100 million Windozes boxes are now compromised and they are
the main vehicle for things like spambots, NO Windoze computer should ever
be allowed to connect to the Net, period. Too bad it took Bill Gate$ so
long to discover the Internet and still couldn't get it right.
Unfortunately, his toy operating system was never built for security and
still isn't.
This is the solution to all security problems.

Very good solution and in fact the only intelligent solution.
The time may come that
Linux needs protection also. I hope it will, Linux will be generally
used then and other minor problems will be solved (hardware mainly).

Think you need to rethink this FUD.
Till that time be safe with Mandriva Linux and a windows partition off
the internet. Easy and simple!!
Correct.

Greetings,

Erik Jan.

Doris

Funny you mention Avast because that's what I use. I prefer it much over
the bloated Norton or McAfee. As for Spybot, I haven't used it for a few
years now because it always froze up and crashed a lot on any computer I
used.
Guess it couldn't handle the large number of bots you had running on your
box.

I'm one of the beta testers,
Shawn

Have you -- or AdAware -- worked out how to uninstall the BETA? <g>

I registered and installed the first public BETA under VISTA and it
would not run. Nor would it uninstall using Remove Programs. Nor could
I install it on top of the faulty installation which sometimes enables
one to uninstall -- it just refused to do it and told me to remove the
installed version first!

I emailded them about this but had no answer! Annoyed me since I'm a
paying customer for the XP version.

Any ideas on how to remove it?

Hi Wayne,

Ad Aware does have a free version and it works quite well. Just the
new 2007 version is not ready for Vista yet. It's never a good idea to
run more than one Antivirus program, but it's always good to run
different spyware/adware scanners to check your system. There has never
been only one that catches everything yet. However, I would recommend
only having one of them using the always on realtime scan (Windows
Defender) and just using the others for a manual scan every now and then
to be extra safe.

There is nothing wrong with having more than one AV program installed. Only
have one doing on access scanning. The other(s) can be used for on demand
scanning.

Some AVs will not install if you have other ones already installed.

I use NOD32 in real-time, and ClamWin for an on-demand second opinion.

I've not run into that, but then I haven't tried all combos, or even close
to it.

Last time I tried OneCare, it wanted me to get rid of NOD32 even though
I disabled all real-time functions.... I don't think so. ;-)

Brink. Thanks for the reply. You do seem to be saying one anti-spy/adware
prog "at a time". That was my point. Even Defender says this, in it's own
way. Just looking at all the posts says there's a lot of disagreement about
this.
My W D is set for real time.
One good thing about adware is the # of prizes I win. Today I won 3
computers and 2 46" HDTVs. If I had a warehouse I'd claim them! Wayne

Ah, Ok, I did some Beta testing on OneCare in XP when it was first being
developed. I had it running with AVG as a backup. That was some time ago,
obviously, but I believe AVG was installed first. Prior to the addition of
OneCare I turned off AVG's on access scanning. OneCare didn't complain
during the install that it was present. I thought the idea of it was good
for inexperienced users, but it wasn't my cup of tea, so I opted not to pay
for it when it became available.

I do run Avast for on access scanning on one system with AVG for on demand
scanning, with no problems.

I have also experieced difficulty and cannot get aaw2007 to install on my
widows vista operated Lap Top. If it is not yet compatible with the vista
operating system why the hell don't they tell you. I have been trying for two
hours to make an install and keep getting a window telling me there is a
fatal error.

Hmm, not sure where you looked. It's clearly indicated on the Lavasoft web
site that it's not Vista compatible.
