Spyware Program

Has anybody tried the new Lavasoft Adaware 2007 on Vista yet? It worked
great on an XP machine, but on my Vista machine, it scanned and found
infections but as soon as I went to delete them, an error message popped up,
and the program had to be terminated. I don't remember the exact error
message. It did this consistently each time. The old Lavasoft Adaware SE
Personal 1.06 worked flawlessly, and in fact, I put it back on. Has anybody
else who's tried the new Adaware run into any problems with Vista? Thanks.
I might try reinstalling it and trying again.

Here's the error message:

'An error has occurred in Ad-Aware 2007 Pro!

Component:
TVirtualStringTree

Message:
Canvas does not allow drawing

Send this information to Lavasoft Support Team
(https://secure.lavasoft.com/support/supportcenter/) and also what you just
did to help us track down this error.
Ad-Aware now terminates.'

This is interesting also because I don't have Ad-Aware 2007 Pro, I have the
free version.

According to the Lavasoft website, Ad-aware 2007 is *not* compatible
with Vista. So don't bother reinstalling it after you uninstall it. I'm
sure they are working on Vista compatibility but it isn't ready now.

Well, it's too late, I already installed it, but I see what the problem is
now. When I have Aero disabled, it works and I don't get any error
messages, but I can see why it's not Vista-compatible now. What I think is
rediculous is the old version works better on Vista than their new version
they've been working on.

Vista comes with Windows Defender, which includes anti-spyware and
anti-adware.
It works flawlessly on my computer. Why would you need another? Possibly
running more than one at a time is causing problems. If you want to run
another, then disable Windows Defender. My advice - dump Lavasoft and stick
with Windows Defender. Don' t fall for all the hype! Free is best.

Ad-aware6SE IS free. Defender is crap, and misses most spyware.
Microsoft should have stuck to trying to build OS, instead of trying to be
everything to everyone.
They want to corner all the market: OS, anti-virus, anti-spyware.

There are much better products out there for free.
Anti-virus: Avast free 4 home
Anti-Spyware: spybot search & destroy

Out of date. Ad-Aware 2007, 7.0 is now available.

Not Vista compatible. 8.0 (to be released this month) will be.

One possibility is that Defender has been tested against other similar
products and have been rated the worst by most test results.

Same for the built-in AV. Usually finished last in the tests I have seen.

Free may be best........................if it works.

I have Windows Defender and Adaware. It's always good to have more than one
spyware program because one program will not catch it all. Defender has
never caught anything yet, where Adaware consistently catches something
every time I scan. It's antivirus software that you want only one of.

Funny you mention Avast because that's what I use. I prefer it much over
the bloated Norton or McAfee. As for Spybot, I haven't used it for a few
years now because it always froze up and crashed a lot on any computer I
used.

Windows does not come with A/V built-in. Are you talking about Windows Live
or are you talking about Windows's built-in firewall?

On my XP box, I use Spywareblaster, Spywareguard, AdAware 2007 and
Spybot, Search & Destroy. I also use Crap Cleaner, which if used to
clean up temp files usually renders the results from AdAware and Spybot
to nil. For an AV, I use Avast and for a firewall, Sygate.

On my Ubuntu box, no need for any of the above except a router hard
firewall by Edimax.

He's probably referring to MS' No Care "AV" program. It's about as good
as their Defenseless program

...."It's not FUD, it's fact: Linux is every bit as susceptible to

So your convinced that linux does not need any anti-virus, anti-spyware.
The experts don't agree with you.

This may be true in theory, but till the time that the internet mafia
discovers Linux, we will be quite safe. I am very happy with my Mandriva
Linux without any antivirus/spyware programs. Some time ago someone
used my credit car data after I had used the card via Windows. This
meant that I had to remove the whole Windows partition in order to
remove the rootkit or whatever it was that my antivirus/antispyware
could not find, and spend two days reinstalling everything. Since then I
do my financial business via Linux (dual boot). Since a few months I
have removed all antivirus/spyware from my Windows partition and Windows
reacts fast again. It is simply no longer connected to the internet!!
This is the solution to all security problems. The time may come that
Linux needs protection also. I hope it will, Linux will be generally
used then and other minor problems will be solved (hardware mainly).
Till that time be safe with Mandriva Linux and a windows partition off
the internet. Easy and simple!!

Greetings,

Erik Jan.

They must be "experts" the same way that Frankie Boy is an "expert". <snort>
