SpyBot finds problem

I updated SpyBot S&D today and ran a scan. When the scan was complete it
found a problem with a redirected host.

<MySoft: Redirected host (Redirected host, nothing done)
<Sitefinder.Verisign.com=127.0.0.1>

As you can see from the log text cited above the problem was not fixed.
I do have an entry in my Hosts file that redirects Sitefinder.Verisign.com
back to my local machine but until today it has never been detected by
SpyBot. It is identified as a problem and automatically marks it for removal
but "Fix all problems" does not touch it. A scheduled scan at next boot
produces the same results.

I am pretty sure that this is not a security breach but I am wondering if
anyone else has noticed this problem since updating S&D. I have had the same
entries in my Hosts file for quite some time and this detection has not
happened until today.

Should I exclude this detection from future scans?
TIA............Mark N.

I just updated Spybot S & D the other day and got a similar problem.

I use the MVPS HOSTS file. And I know what was found was not a problem.

MVPS HOSTS file is a free download from:
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Exclude it. I did that with mine.

Thanks Wesley,
Your reply does indeed help. I was pretty sure it wasn't a problem. I just
wanted some confirmation that it was OK to exclude it.

Wesley,
I'm new to XP home and have a LAN with win98 machine. I read the above link,
but would like to be reassured that the Hosts file will not interfer with my
LAN connections. I already have an ICS file 'hosts' and a text file 'HOSTS'
in the ...ETC... folder. Will these remain intact or be overwritten with
perhaps harmful effects. Thanks you.

Hi Steve,

Iowa, huh? I grew up there. :-D

I set my HOSTS file to Read-only. I do not have a Hosts.ics file. I don't
use Internet Connection Sharing.

Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc | Right click HOSTS |
Properties | Next Attributes check the Read-only box | Click Apply |
Click OK

The HOSTS file from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm should not
effect the Hosts.ics file. That's just like Microsoft to name things so
similar.

You can also change your Hosts.ics to Read-only so that it cannot be
overwritten.

Read-only Attribute that enables a user to read and/or copy the data but
not write to that data and/or directory.

[[The Hosts.ics file is used by ICS to store information about dynamically
configured clients. Avoid making changes to this file to prevent the loss of
connectivity or data.]]
