The HKEY keys are the the root keys for the registry.
Think of them like drive letters are in Windows Explorere
and you get an idea how broad they are. All entries in
the registry start with HKEY_.
SpyBot has a new name I forget (Spy Hunter?), because
there is a worm called "spybot". The removal tool isn't
free, but is modestly priced. Other anti-spyware is good,
too.
Yes, various things spybot (or whatever) finds can
greatly affect your internet behavior. Some are also
required - the price you pay - for file sharing software
or other "free" goodies.
Do not try to remove these by deleting the registry keys.
The registry can be a touchy thing to tinker with!
