Spy Destroy Programs

Dave

Hello, I was wondering what you fine people could tell me
about these Spy Bot destroyer programs. I normally don't
like to download new programs from the internet but I
have been hearing alot about this I am wondering if I
should get one and which one is correct for me. If any
of you could spare your advice on the matter I would be
most appreciative. Thank you for your time, and good day
to you.

If you follow reasonably safe computing practices, and it
sounds like you probably do, chances are you'll never
need one. However, the two Doug mentioned are the
general favorites.

Actually, everyone needs them and should run them frequently as well as
running the parasite scanner located at www.aumha.org
Parasites, spybots, adware, etc. are attached to browsers just by visiting a
site. No downloading is neccessary in order to get these.

Get rid of the spy/ad/mal-ware..
(Yes - using MORE than one of these..
I recommend at least the first three.)

Spybot Search and Destroy

Lavasoft AdAware
http://www.lavasoft.de

CWSShredder

Hijack This!

I also like "The Cleaner" and "SpywareBlaster" and "SpywareGuard".

The first is a PAY product, but useable for 30 days - it has found and
eliminated problems in the past the others did not. The latter two are
prevention mechanisms. I like SpywareGuard for those with enough processor
to have something running like antivirus software - and it prevents browser
hijacking quite well.

And Assortment of Others:

I purchased Spykiller 2004 software thru Swanksoft
Technologies, and it does find parasites and deletes
them. But not sure how really effective it is! I
haven't noticed a big difference in anything. At first I
had it configured in my start up file, and took 30 mins
to scan files. So I removed it from startup/bootup and
now can run it when I prefer. Between that at virus
scanning, I lose time on the PC with other work!

That just tells me I have javascript disabled. Well OF
COURSE I have javascript disabled ;-)

Any other vectors of attack that I should know about?

Greetings --

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or
KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without
understanding the consequences) installed, two products that are
quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even
possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system
against most future intrusions. I use both and generally perform
manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

Many popular sites need JS enabled to function properly, so most people have
it on.
