Spurious recorded space used on Hard drive

Following a number of System Restore actions to resolve problems, my 60Gb
hard drive shows 15.8 Gbs of space have been used whereas I belirve it to be
nearer 3 Gb. How can this be checked for accuracy and the problem be
rectified without harming my programs and data? Grateful for assistance.

Have you tried to do a scandisk and defrag from the safemode. In this
mode, it usally just loads the basic needed to start and run the
windows. Make sure you turn off the screen saver and background saver
too.
