Spreadsheet files load very slowly when connected to the Internet

Has anyone seen or experienced slow loading spreadsheet
files when they are connected to the internet. I have a
dial up connection and you can see activity going over
the internet via the dial up status monitor in the task
bar while loading an excel file. When not connected, the
excel files load quickly. Almost like I have a hidden
trojan horse or virus that is undetected and monitoring
the spreadsheets being loaded.
