Spoolsv.exe hangs Office / Excel 2007

This is my first post ... never had any issue so frustrating. My Excel 2007
running on Vista Ultimate sp1 kept hanging on a very important spreadsheet.
the sheet would not open and had to be closed after "program is not
responding" message.

I scanned with Eset Nod32, and with Hijackthis. No problems were found.
Reinstalled Office Enterprise 2x
Reinstalled Vista Ultimate 2x

still no luck
Finally booted in Safe Mode and the Excel sheet opened fine.

Rebooted and began the laborious task of turning off one process at a time
and trying Excel. FOUND THE CULPRIT -- Spoolsv.exe. When its turned off
everything works fine.

I thought it might be a bad load disk, so I reinstalled Vista Business this
time. Along with Office. No change. Still hangs Office programs.

After much searching, I can get it to work if I delete All of the printers
-- It wouldn't work even I only had the MS soft printers like "Send to
Onenote" printer. So, its not a network thing.

I'm at wits end. Reinstalled new drivers from the makers websites, etc etc.
Searched the web till I'm blue in the face (find a lot about spools but
usually it isnt working) and can find nothing on Office programs hanging when
spoolsv.exe is running.

Hope you all can help.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit on a XEON quad core processor with 4 GB of Ram and about 100 GB of free disk space. I've let it update itself automatically.

I'm having a similar problem. So far, Vista Search is still looking for spoolsv.exe. Since I don't use the Vista PC for printing, I will try just deleting SpoolSv.exe and eliminating all references to it from the registry. My spreadsheet loads every 2nd time I try it as long as I reboot the PC before trying to load it again. Very frustrating and time consuming.

Thanks for tracking down the possible connection to SpoolSv.

Ok, it wouldn't let me delete any of the 3 copies of spoolsv.exe. Also Regedit hung up and had to be cancelled when I tried to exit from it after deleting some references to spoolsv.exe

I've deleted the default printer (Microsoft's print to a file thingee) and the fax from the printers in control panel so there are no printers defined. I've rebooted.

Now the spreadsheet came up. Of course, in the past it usually did that after a reboot. I guess I'll find out if that fixed this problem for me.
