spooler subsystem and a host of other issues

I have windows xp home edition 5.1.2600 and am signed up
for automatic updates. I don't know if that is working
correctly, but it isn't my issue, just for background
information.

I had a microtek scanner that is not xp compatible hooked
up and it worked fine for a long time. Suddenly it
wouldn't work, so I ordered an Epson 1670 and that is when
trouble started.

Main problem: error messages:

Spooler Subsystem App
error signature szAppName: spoolsv.eve szAppVer:5.1.2600
on and on

I went deeper and got:
C:\DOCUME~1\Bernie...on an on with the file location
ending in \spoolsr.exe.mdmp and another message ending in
\appcompat.txt

These messages occurred in the copy function of the
scanners when they tried to print to my HP1012 laser
printer. Epson also did another strange thing..wiped out
my printer icons in the control panel. Broke the
connection too. Rebooting restored them. I did this
several times. Epson tech said couldn't happen but it
did. Epson also said their scanner didn't support HP
printer (the number one printer in the world and they
don't support it!!!).

So, how do I fix the spooler problem? I am not very
computer literate but can follow detailed directions
well. I can call you and you can talk me through it. Do I
reconnect my microtek scanner once this is fixed or will
it cause problems? Is my xp up to date? The really bad
no DSL in my area and I am on dial up at 26K!!! So
large downloads don't work well. If you can help, email
me at (e-mail address removed). Thanks.

There is a driver for your scanner on the Epson site dated 12/30/03, maybe newer than
what shipped with your scanner.

Might want to see if you have the latest driver for your printer as well.

Try running the system file checker:

START | RUN | SFC /SCANNOW

You'll need your XP CD

Mary:
Your reply referred to the Microsoft KB article for the error:
"Subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close"

This is invariably caused by using the "Setup a Home or Small Offic
Network" wizard. Articles 324757/810894 do not resolve the problem an
send novice users into the registry.

Instead download the utility posted by Brother Ltd which repairs th
spooler:
