You seem to have more than one problem. One may be
causing the other but I'm not sure - there are so many
possibilities. You were attempting to download updates so
I assume that you don't have the Microsoft security
patches and etc. installed - so your machine has a good
chance of being infected with something (many
somethings).

If you aren't behind a firewall then activate the one that
comes with XP. Run Help and Support and search 'firewall'
(without the quotation marks). Once you get your computer
running the way you want it try Zone Alarm (find via
Google).

If you have an anti-virus program then update and run it.
If not then try to get an online scan at one of the
following

http://www.pandasoftware.es/activescan/activescan-com.asp
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/

then try a trojan scan at

http://www.trojanscan.com/trojanscan/scanner.htm

if a trojan is located then the following advice should
help. It comes courtesy Kent W. England, Microsoft MVP
for Windows Security

Trojans are stealthy and not always found by anti-virus
software. If you find suspicious processes running or task
manager or regedit is being killed after opening, you
might want to try one of the following tools to check for
trojans (after scanning with at least two anti-virus tools
to get rid of the easy stuff).

DiamondCS TDS-3 - Trojan Defence Suite (TDS), leading anti-
trojan system for Windows: http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

Agnitum: Products: Tauscan: Home:

Mischel Internet Security - TrojanHunterT: Finds and
removes trojans: http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter.jsp

MooSoft Development Presents The Cleaner:

Hacker Eliminator. - Advanced Hacker Protection:

***

Next do a Google search for Ad-Aware. Download and
update, then run. Follow this with a Google search for
Spybot. Download and update, then run. Update and use
both every couple of days.

If none of this helps and if nobody else has any
suggestions and if you're still having problems then
format C:\ and re-install XP. If things reach this point
then once you're done remember to activate the XP firewall
and install anti-virus software BEFORE you go on-line to
get the applicable updates for your machine

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

The internet is filled with friendly people but that
doesn't make it a friendly environment. Without the
minimum protection of a firewall, applicable Microsoft
updates, and a good anti-virus program you have as much
chance of success as the coyote in a roadrunner cartoon.

Hi, I just overcame the same problem. what i did was
turn off the printer, shutdown windows, and unplugged the
printer from the usb connection i was using, but i
suppose a printer port cable should be unplugged while
the computer is off. i had the usb so i started up
windows without the printer and plugged it back in after
reboot because you can make a hot connection with a usb.
i would suggest rebooting without the printer port cable
just to get up and running without it at first, then
shutdown again and connect it back with the comp
shutdown, turn on the printer, and boot up. now i got
the printers back and i say printers because i had the
fax installed and there was internal printer that intuit
installed from a program install. i would probably not
use the fax and definitely not the internal printer, so
basically i deleted all the printers except the one
default that i would use. XP installs the printers
pretty much on its own, and if not, a driver can usually
be found in an update, so i didnt try to add printer
except on a networked computer and it found it fine after
some tweaking with internet security firewalls, but thats
another story...
hope that helps
