Split Database vs. Access Project

I have an Access Database that I want multiple users to share, some of whom
work remotely from home. I have split the database into front and back ends.
Can I simply convert the back end to an sql server format, and connect the
front end to those sql tables, or do I have to upsize the front end to a MS
project?

Also, I experimented with upsizing the database using the MSSQL server
version of sql that came with my Office 2003 program (skinny version). Can I
migrate that to a shared network drive, and what needs to be installed on the
network drive to accept it?
