spellcheck on Outlook express

I cannot get the Spellcheck to work on either my Outlook
Express email message or on the Word Pad Windows 97 .
Could someone tell me what to do. I did look at Tools and
Options and everything is in order as far as the checks
saying that it would spellcheck after my message was
written, but everytime I click spellcheck, a message
comes on the board saying that it has been stopped,
Anyone know what I can do .
