Spellcheck doesn't recognise letters in some words

I've got a recurring problem with my MS Word Spellcheck. It does not search
full words.
So, if I type "A shortened version of....", my spellchecker picks up
"(s)hortened" as beig incorrect. It doesn't see the letter s. It then
recommedns that I change the word to "shortened", which produces a final word
of "sshortened".
Clearly, the second s should not be there, but MS Word doesn't seem to see
this.

Any advice?

It "feels" to me like a problem with the font, although it's hard to say exactly
what. If you double click such a word, does it pick up the entire Word, or "see"
it the same way as spellcheck?

If you select the entire word (from your POV), then go to Tools/Language/Set
language what's selected in the list? And what's the setting of the "Do not
check..." checkbox?

I'm thinking that either

1. The single letter is formatted with a different language
or
2. Some invisible character is between the letters, or the "s" has been typed as
some kind of symbol, rather than a "proper" character

Or the single letter is formatted as "Do not check spelling..."
