spell checking of txt files

Guest

I have some .txt files that I use as part of my web site, but the FrontPage
spell checker does not seem to be able to spell check the .txt files. (the
spell check option is greyed-out on the Tools menu)

Is there a way to get FrontPage to spell check a .txt file?

If not, what file extensions (other than htm, html) will FrontPage's spell
checker work with?

htm(l), asp.

Why not just change the extensions to htm, spell check and rename back to .txt ?

Renaming to htm(l) or asp destroys the original text formatting, and is
therefore not a useful solution.

When I take a .txt file and rename it to .htm in folder view, the formatting does goes away, I do my
spell check, make any corrections, save the document as .htm, then in folder view, I rename it .txt
and I have my original .txt formatting with no added HTML tags.

BTW: I did this under FP2000.

I need to have a way to spell check without losing formatting and without
having to rename the file twice and then delete the "phoney" file name.... I
have nearly a thousand of these txt files and they are frequently edited, so
your idea is simply too cumbersome.

Thank you for your idea, but it is not a useful solution

You can try setting FP to edit .txt files, but it may alter the file content.

You will need to locate a text editor the also includes a spell checker and then set that as the
text editor in FP to manage your text files.

or

You need to rethink your current approach of using text files within you web, if they have to be
spell checked.

There are plenty of free and/or cheap text editors that have spell check.
why don't you get one?

FP doesn't have spell check for text files so you're going to have it do it
in multiple steps one way or another. All the whining you're doing won't
change that.

The idea of Frontpage is to be an integrated development environment...

So, I'm hoping that someone has created an add-in or add-on which will allow
the spell checker to work on a txt file in FrontPage.... that would be a very
nice solution.

If you google "text file spell checker" you will find many text editors that will spell check
- then in FP (Tools Option Configure Editors) just set that as your default editor for .txt files

I have tried that approach, but unfortunately whenever I use any editor other
than those editors built-in to FrontPage, then when I tell FrontPage to
publish the
web site, FrontPage does not properly detect that those changed files should
be published... and for some reason does not publish any of the files that
were changed by an editor other than FrontPage's own internal editors.

If you have the text editor configured under FP Editors, then when you save and Close the document,
FP will update the hidden meta data to show the file have been updated.

The key here is that you have to Close the external editor after each document.

There may be a key somewhere.. but it's not quite as simple as you suggest.

For example, today as a test, I edited a txt file with the FrontPage
built-in text editor, and saved that file. Then, I right-clicked on a second
file name, and chose to use Word as the editor, made a change, saved the file
and closed Word. Then I right-clicked on a third file, and used NoteTab text
editor, made a file change, saved the file and closed NoteTab.

Then I asked FrontPage to publish all changed pages.... there were three
changed pages, but FrontPage only found and uploaded one of them... which is
why I had given up on attempting to use external text editors with Front Page.

Over the past several months I've tried serveral external txt editors, and
in every case FrontPage somehow manages to fail to recognize many of the
changes.... and all I really got was very erratic results, with FrontPage
(2003 SP1) sometimes recognizing the change, and sometimes not recognizing it.

So... I was really hoping when starting this thread that someone, somewhere
had created an add-in (or a clever trick) that would allow the use of a spell
checker in the FrontPage text editor.

You must be sure to close the editing application after saving the file, or the file meta data is
not updated in FP. The editor must be configured under Tools | Options, to be used as the Editor for
..txt files and you must open the file in the editor from within FP.

Yes.. as I stated in the previous post... I did all of those things...

In each test I opened the file by a right click to chose a previously
defined text editor from within FrontPage (2003 SP1), altered a file, saved
the file and closed the file editor... but the file publishing results are
(and have been for several months, on two different computers, using several
different text editors) always erratic.

The data in the corresponding _vti_cnf for each altered file always seems to
be updated, but is apparently not updated properly, because the files are not
published reliably.

Have you run a Tools | Recalculate Hyperlink command prior to publishing.

You did not indicate that you had save the text file when you open it in Notepad. Also what happen
when you double-click a text, and it opens in Notepad from within FP, is it the same results as
using the File Open With command.
