Is there a spell checker out there that really checks spelling? By "really"
I mean that the spell checker spots words with two or more letters wrong and
is not easily thrown off. (I am a poor speller -- and I know misspelled
words since I attended grade school.

Thank you,

G'Day Barry,

Any spell checker is only as good as the dictionary that comes with it.

MS Word's spell/grammar checker is as good as any.

NO spell checker can detect a wrongly spelled word if it is, in fact,
another valid word.

I can defect an incorrect sword by scanning the meaning, Word can not.

Do a Google reach for "word supplemental dictionaries" and download
any that are if interest.

Again, Word is unlikely to find the errors in the previous two
sentences!

As Pat has motioned too ewe, yew Kant thrust spill chick withered exorcising
pane.

[Note: the previous sentence passed both Spell and Grammar check with MS
Word 2003.]

Suggestion:

1.) Do what we did in the days of typewriters: Read your work from
the last word to the first word. This method forces one to see a single word
at a time rather than seeing sentences at a time.

2.) Make friends with a pedant and bribe them to proof your important
work.

CAUTION: When creating AutoText, ensure that you have spelled the
text correctly. There are few more embarrassing moments in one's career than
to have your boss point out that you have consistently misspelled your
company's (or your Boss's) name throughout a three-hundred page RFP.

Almost any spell checker does an excellent job of recognizing words that
don't exist. It simply matches what you've typed against a dictionary and
flags mismatches. So if you type "hda" when you mean "had," it will catch it
But if you type "hat" when you mean "had," there's no spell checker that
will check spelling in context to realize that "I never hat been there"
makes no sense, and it's probably "had" that you actually meant.
