I left un-checked "Ignore Words With Number". Yet, my Spell Check has NEVER
caught any words with numbers such as: "per3son". I checked it and
re-booted; un-checked it and re-booted. Yet the Spell Check (Word 2003)
never catches any words misspelled and containing a number. Thank you.

It works fine here. My guess is a minor corruption in the Word data key in
the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data

Using regedit, backup this key, then delete it (see
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm for instructions). Word
will create a new default key. You will lose some user preferences but you
can restore them easily enough.
