I have recently installed servive pack 2, and althouth my
modem appears to be working the safely remove hardware
icon is in the task bar wanting me to remove my modem.
please can anyone help fix this problem please

It should have always been there if it is an USB device.

Best you can do is change the properties on the "Safe to Remove Hardware"
icon to "Always Hide".
