for everybody's benefit... here is the answer...

Answer
Power problems

Common symptoms for power problems include your PC freezing, you losing
Broadband connection and needing to reboot every 10 minutes, USB lights on
your Modem dying or your PC is extremely slow.
These can be symptoms of running VIA/ ALI/ SIS motherboard chipsets used
with a PC running an AMD processor. These chipsets do not generate enough
power to for USB broadband modems and motherborards particularly affected
seem to be the KT133, KT7, and Asus A7V.
To find this information click:

start
run
then type dxdiag
This will launch Direct X diagnostics, on the system tab check under system
information and you will see the type of processor used.
To find out the chipset you are using, click

start
control panel
system to go into the device manager. Scroll to the very bottom, click on
the plus sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and you see the make
of the chipset used on the motherboard.
It is worth checking you Device manager for Bandwidth & power usage on the
USB Host Controller, and if there is any doubt, try removing other USB
Devices (such as wireless LAN adapters, scanners, USB mouse), or using a
supplemental powered USB Hub. If that doesn't work, and you are running an
AMD processor, the only fix is to install an internal PCI broadband modem.
card or PCI USB card as the Alcatel modem supplied by Tiscali will not work.
Call 0870 744 2922 for more help and advice on this issue. Lines are open
from 8am until midnight and calls are charged at national call rates.
If you have a VIA chipset but are running an Intel Processor, a software fix
is available at the VIA technologies website. The Installation guide for the
driver is available here .

But the above is what you would expect from a modem manufacturer.

Sometimes it is actually the fault of the modem - some USB ADSL modems
draw more than the 500mA max current allowed for high powered devices.
Asking your ISP for a non-USB ADSL modem is the answer. Mine uses
Ethernet and is no problem at all.
