Speeding up BIOS part of startup

Well, I'm not sure if it could be called the BIOS part, but I'm
referring to the time from you push Power On until XP starts loading. I
have installed BootVis and it really made my new computer faster. I
clocked everything from pushing Power. It took 26 seconds with all the
DOS screens before XP started loading. From there it took another 20
until my computer was ready for use. I am happy with the last part, but
is it normal that it takes this long before XP starts loading? If not,
what can I do to make it faster?

I know it's not a big deal when we're talking seconds, but getting a
new computer just made me want to see how everything can be optimized
from the get-go.

Thanks for any advice!

You can disable, not delete, many apps from loading, robbing you of
your system resources at boot time.
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and click OK, click the Startup tab
Look at all the apps that are checked, many can be disabled except
your anti-virus program. Uncheck/disable the ones you do not use
or do not need, click Apply and Close. Reboot. Close window after
boot that you've changed your startup. Should speed it up considerably.
All apps will work by clicking their respective icons or listing in All
Programs.

Hello,
I believe you are correct, the first part of the startup process is the
"BIOS" checks.
You can change some settings in the "BIOS", don't know if it will speed the
"BIOS" checks and it may cause problems.
I have two separate units one with "Dual BIOS", BIOS takes about 18/20
seconds and other unit standard "BIOS",BIOS takes about 13/15 seconds.
Part of the 26 seconds you noted is probable not the "BIOS" but the "MBR",
Master Boot Record. 46 seconds is very good.
take care.

there are 28800 secs in an 8 hour day is it really that important? - switch
pc on, go make a coffee

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll give it a try. And to DL: I knew some
bitter guy would trashtalk the issue, even if I put a disclaimer
showing that I realize it's not a big deal. The thing is, though, I
wanted to know so I asked. How can that possibly be a problem for you?

It's 86400 (60*60*24) seconds and 1440 minutes, but who's
counting?

You should try hard to refrain from thinking that because you
don't care about something, no one else does. It's myopic, for
one thing.

The OP clearly states it's an educational goal.
Not only that, but inordinately long periods of time in any
process can be an indication of many things ranging from the
mundane to the critical, indicating an impending disaster about
to happen or that will happen eventually.

Education allows one to know what they don't know.
Not becoming educated, well, one never knows what they're
missing.

Good luck with your darkness; you're free to choose it of course.
