- Run msconfig.exe and disable non-essential tasks.
- Use a virus scanner with a light footprint. The most
popular scanners try to do everything for everybody
and have a strong effect on performance.
- Consider using a hardware firewall (e.g. a router)
instead of a software firewall.
- Install at least 512 MBytes of RAM.

off all the pretty "eye-candy" supplied with XP.
