Speed altered with display settings?

Have looked thru posts to no avail. Have older 300 mHz PC
with W2000pro.
Takes 12-15 sec. to open MS Word, My Docs, Recycle Bin.
Thought - due to slow CPU, but have Wme on another 300 mHz
PC that hauls. For unrelated reason - changed screen area
settings in display properties to higher resolution-PC
responded more quickly(timed it). Shutdown, restarted; it
saved my new settings, but is back to old slow response
times. Everything works but is way too slow. Any ideas as
to what might be going on?
Thanks for the help.

Almost certainly your PC is short of RAM.

256Mb is a reasonable minimum for Windows 2000. 128Mb doesn't really cut
it.
