speaker system does not allow "voice"

I have a set of Altec Lansing speakers connected to my
compaq presario S55l0 --- i can hear music on my player,
i can hear music others play in rooms, but i cannot voice
or play music so others can hear....... any suggestions?
I had this system hooked up to my old computer and it
worked fine, can't figure out why it won't work with this
one.. Help!

In the bottom righthand corner of your monitor is
a "Sound" icon, rightclick it and click Adjust Audio
Properties > Speaker Settings/Speaker Volume button and
set the sliders to about 65% or click restore defaults.
Click the Advanced button check if it is set to desktop
speakers, then click the Performance tab and set
Acceleration to Full and Sample rate to Best > Apply > OK.
Also open your volume control and make sure none of your
settings are on "Mute".
