Network the computers. Its that simple. Then change share
options on that computer's disk so that all others (on the
network) can access its directories and files. Done.

For further information, read the help notes provided by
Windows or get some books about using the features in Windows.

Hi squibbly, I too have spare computer and I have already set it up in
networking Using a CAT 5e crossover cable with my two NIC 100/1000
cards. Of course the spare computer doesn't access the Internet can
use the printer of my primary PC.

[Q] What's the difference between CAT 5e patch cable and CAT 5e
crossover cable?

[A] The difference has to do with the wiring of the cable and the
situation in which you will use the cable.

On a CAT 5e patch cable, the wiring configuration is identical on both
ends of the cable.

On a CAT 5e crossover cable, the wiring of pins 1, 2, 3, and 6 are
"crossed-over" to pins 3, 6, 1, and 2.

CAT 5e crossover cables are used in situations where two devices have
the same interface, for example, connecting a hub to a hub, or a
switch to a switch, or even when patching a hub or switch into a
wallplate.

The most common use is to connect two PCs directly to each other,
without the use of any kind of router, hub, or switch. This is called
a peer-to-peer network, and is a low-cost solution to allow file and
Internet sharing between two computers.

Hope this helps.

When either system has a 1000Mb (Gb) adapter, you do not
need a crossover cable for *ANY* connection to (any) 1000Mb
NIC. The auto mdix function is part of the spec and is
always supported with a straight cable.

Older equipment, sometimes- though most modern networking
gear has uplink ports (perhaps switchable, a mechanical
switch-lever on the device) if not auto mdix.

What kind of LAN - P2P or Domain?

Do you expect services to be available on the Internet? If so, does
your ISP block common ports for Internet services?

Since you appear new to this I recommend you obtain a copy of the
Apache Web Server - it's free. Set it up on you machine and talk to it
with your browser. Then talk to it from a machine on your LAN. Finally
talk to it from a machine on the Internet.

Then get a copy of an FTP server and do the same things again. War
Demon used to be popular.

By the time you figure out what is going on, you will know enough
about servers to run them.

mainly web server and MySQL server

web server is easy. i used to use omni, it was a real good server, now
when i do serve from home i use 602 lansuite, but most use apache. on
linux or windows, or even many other os's, apache is pretty much free, but
so is the 5 user version of lansuite, which does a bang up job serving
pages. the user limit is more about local access, fine if you're the only
one using it, you have a personal user name, a web master alias, and a
dummy for spam to be sent to.

any mail gets sent to a dummy it's spam, you'd delete from there and all
other mail accounts, most spam is stopped dead, that's what at least one
guy on news.grc.com does.

for the sql server, i dunno, i never got past installing it and getting
stuck, i didn't need it, so it's gone.
