The span element is usually used to set styles on certain blocks of text,
often where a div or paragraph element would be cumbersome or not a good
idea. A lot of times the span's will show up when using a copy and paste
from another office application like word directly into FrontPage. If this
is the reason, it may be best to copy into another program first, such as
notepad, in order to loose a lot of this funky office formatting.

Please post a url to a page displaying the problem. As Mark mentioned spans
are used for specific purposes but if you have an abundance of span tags
then you may want to change some configuration options.
