Space on Hard Drive

I have a laptop with 40GB Hard Disc running XP HE. Apparently I have 13.5GB
free. I can't believe that so much is used. I am nothing close to that on
my Desktop which only has a 20GB Hard Drive but is running W98SE. I had to
use the Recovery Disc when my laptop failed to come back after a System
Restore. Now I believed that what that did was re-format my hard drive but
is it possible that somehow all the old information is still there somehow
and using up my Hard Drive or does XP just use that disc space!!

Hi Phil
Thanks for replying. When I had to use the Recovery Disc I did have to put
all the information in for XP again like my name etc.

If you hard drive was reformatted you would know. Try looking into
the Document and Settings folder. There you will see all the profiles The
data that you are looking for will more than likely be im one of these
profile settings.

I have just checked my Desktop and that has a 20GB drive and it has only
used up 4.96GB in 4 years and has 14GB free. I obviously have the same
progs and roughly if not more pictures etc on my desktop than on my laptop

Check to see how much you allow system restore to take up. Apparently each
restore point created can be up to 200mb each, so that might be the problem.
Try disabling system restore and see if that frees up any space.

Also if you didn't do a clean install and just recovered Windows XP, all
your previous user files will still be there, which could be the reason for
the taken up space.

Hope this helps,
