I am wanting to print some very large letters (approx 800 or 900) on an A4
page. The letter should fit, I estimate it to be about 25cm in height.
However the bottom part of the letter is pushed off the bottom of the page
into oblivion by a 10cm space at the top of the page. This is nothing to do
with the page margins, but perhaps something to do with paragraph settings or
something, as when I highlight the letter, this gap is highlighted too.

How do I reduce this gap, so that the top of the letter starts at the top of
the page?

Your help is much appreciated.

You probably have the paragraph set to Single or At Least spacing,
which allows a percentage of the font height to separate the lines --
and that also affects the first (only) line on the page.

Go to Format > Paragraph and set the line spacing to Exactly, and try
various numbers of points. Start with the nominal font size and work
down from there until the top of the letter starts to disappear. For
example, I had no problem fitting a 900 pt Arial Narrow upper case A
within an 800 pt line spacing, but the amount will vary for other
fonts.

That's done the trick, thanks Jay.
