SP4 and Server 2000 BSOD

B

Blaze

I have installed SP4 on a Windows 2000 Server and as the Server boots up to
the Login screen the Server crashes to a BSOD and says STOP 0x0000001E
.......(KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED)

I can boot into safe mode but I cannot roll back the SP install, so I keep
getting the BSOD

I have looked in the event log and I don't see any reason for the crash.

any advice .... help please ?

I have searched Tech Net and Such... here is the answer I hope

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831264

now do I have to pay M$ £160 to fix the server which was working OK untill I
updated their SP4...

is there any other way ?

If the fix corrects your problem, you don't have to actually pay. Call
support and tell them you're being impacted by the problem and need the
fix and they should provide it to you.

Many different problems can produce the same error message. That page
doesn't mention applying SP4 as a cause so I am doubtful.

You can also search the WWW and Usenet using Google. There is good
info out there that isn't in the official Microsoft sources.

Frequently I find that somebody else has already encountered the
problem and has documented the fix. Sometimes they are also nice
enough to let you download the patch for free from their website.
(There is, of course, the possibility of trojan horses and viruses.)

NOW ITS CHANGED lol

stop: 0x0000000A (0x00000000,0x00000002,0x00000001,0x8042DE20)
IRQL_NOTLESS_OR_EQUAL
address 8042DE20 base at 804000000, datestamp 3ee6c002 - ntoskrnl.exe

stop 0x0000000A is usually caused by one of these three:

1. Bad hardware, especially bad RAM, bad hard drive, bad hard drive
cable, or bad hard drive controller.
2. Bad device driver.
3. Other bad software, especially corrupted Windows 2000.

# 1 is by far the most likely in my experience.

There are some (lame) troubleshooting tips at:

and

Hi

I had a similar problem but with a workstation after SP4.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812344&Product=win2000
It was due to the AntiVirus software, you might want to try disabling that
and re-applying the SP in safe mode (assuming it will let you).
I was able to roll-back and turn off the AV then reapply and all was well,
hopefully this will help.

OK after lotsa resurching i resolved the issue...

thanks for the advice guys

There is a device drive conflict....

Boot into safe mode and disable as many devices as you can, Sound, Network
Card, CD Rom etc etc

then and reboot normaly and start adding the devices back and rebooting
untill the BSOD returns, then you have the conflict device..

Reinstall the device with new drivers and maby after a reboot chkdsk and
reinstall SP4 from your Hard drive

Man.. I wanna scream..

I installed the Compaq Service Pack for the ML530

I took the ram down to under 1gb and it Blue screened by the login

I moved the network cards around and it Blue screened

I uninstalled the network cards and Installed a SMC card and it blue
screened.

I have installed the network cards from the latest drivers from HP

I can boot to safe mode, and when I disable the cards the server boots to
normal mode fine and is stable..

as soon as I activate one of the cards in NORMAL mode the server will blue
screen between 5 min or on the reboot.

there are no viruses or other things on the PC as the antivitus is working
fine

If I reinstalled windows by doing a "upgrade" would all my settings remain
the same ?
Ie DHCP, DNS, Domain name, Zones etc etc...

there is a second DC with the AD on

I would look at BIOS updates for one thing. There are some
really rough interactions between NIC drivers, BIOS, and OS
version.

Why upgrade the bios/drivers if they're working? Don't trust compaq/hp
bios/driver upgrades. All of my 5300 controllers are slower to initialize
after upgrading the bios on them. Are you using a 5300 controller on your
ML530? If so, try downgrading the bios or driver on it (whichever one you
upgraded). What is your blue screen error message? If it's "Inaccessible
Boot Device", then it's most likely failing on your array controller.

Post your Blue screen message here.

Well, if I didn't trust the Compaq/HP BIOS upgrades then I would not
buy from them -- I seldom do in fact. <grin>
