Currently i use broadband connection to connect to the internet. Recently i
installed SP3 on my laptop and desktop computer. After installing SP3 my
internet connection stopped working. I checked all the configurations, ran
diagnostics software provided by my service provider and took all other
measures but couldn't resolve the problem. Finally i uninstalled SP3 and the
internet started working again. I want to install the SP3, as it is an
essential update from microsoft but now i am afraid to do so because of the
problems i already mentioned. I want urgent help in this regard.

If SP3 was downloaded with an anti-virus, or anti-spyware, program running,
you may have had a bad installation.

From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsxp/cc164204.aspx

* If the configuration of your antivirus software prevents certain system
files from being changed, SP3 installation might fail. Try temporarily
disabling your antivirus software. You can usually do this by right-clicking
your antivirus program icon (which typically appears in the bottom
right-hand corner of the computer screen) and clicking Disable.

* If you disable your antivirus software before you install the service
pack, be sure that you are aware of the risks involved, and be sure to
enable it after the service pack is installed.

Download SP3 to your HDD and then install it again. Before you do, turn off
your anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs such as Windows Defender. If
you use a third party firewall, disable it and turn on the Windows Firewall
in the Control Panel for the installation. Once SP3 is in and working, you
can enable the third party firewall and turn of the Windows Firewall. Do not
keep both running.

Other than other software running possibly interfering with SP3
installation, the SP3 download itself (assuming you did so, but you never
indicated directly) could be botched. Or, the program that derived the ISO
file (you never indicated downloading the ISO or not) could have botched it
writing to CD.

Actually i downloaded an iso image from microsoft and burnt it on a cd and
then installed it. And ya my third party firewall and anti virus both were
running. Disabling firewall and antivirus and reinstalling Sp3 will help or
not???

I am not an expert on this subject, but I have installed SP3 on several
computers without any issues. Somewhere I read comments telling those
installing to turn off any Antivirus programs before installing SP3.
That might be the reason I have not had problems.

You should never have your anti-virus running when you install /any/
program. Have you ever seen some programs tell you it is advised to exit all
other programs before you continue with the installation? That includes the
anti-virus and firewall. Please read all the links in my first post.

See

There may be a couple of other potential issues as well.

"Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3). This support for SP3 is
valid until April 14, 2009."

Bruce,

During an automatic download and install, how does one turn off the AV and
Firewall? I'm not going to get up at 3:00 a.m. on some unknown morning when
Microsoft decides to present updates just to do that. Are you saying
automatic updates should never be done? Somehow Microsoft's update policy
and reality may not dovetail.
