Hi folks,

XP's update process is urging me to do the SP3 thing.
I really don't want IE 7 ... is it possible to upgrade to SP3 without IE7?

thanks

The IE warning does not apply to you since you say you don't have IE7.
Which is great. Because the warning in this document is saying that
if you have IE7 and load SP3, you will not be able to uninstall IE7
without first uninstalling SP3.

If you load SP3 now, and then load IE7 later to test, you can then
uninstall IE7 without touching SP3, since you have a valid uninstall
point for IE7 post SP3 install.

So you are good to go to load SP3, and optionally IE7 later.
Again IE7 and Windows Media Player 11 (the two people are worried about)
are not in SP3.

However, (and there always is, isn't there), if you browse some of the
other postings in this group, you'll see that a lot of problems have
been encountered. Of course in fairness this is a place for problems
and not a place for successes. I had no issue. So have a few others
that have reported it here. But the bottom line is, if you do want
SP3, then I would make sure you have the worst case scenario covered,
and have backups and software available. That or stay away for a while.

There are also a lot of postings on how and what to do all through these
groups. (general and help_and_support).

agreed.

I just switched on XP updates again after having them off for several
months. took a chance and downloaded the windows driver for my Radeon
display controller. trashed my display big-time and had to re-install ATI's
driver set. ah, well.

maybe i'll wait a whiile on SP3.

seems like the more I update windows, the slower my computer gets, esp
startup and shutdown.

"computers - the age old promise of saving us time and making life
easier..." uh, who said that? :)

Installations tend to fragment the drive. Have you defragged the drive
lately?

Whats with Windows Media Player 11/ SP3, is there a problem ?
TKS, Fred
No problem! Those are the two biggest items that are not in SP3. And
there are a good number of people that just don't like WMP11 and want to
stay with WMP10. Same with IE7 vs. IE6.
