SP3 or not to 3?

I would download the full SP3 from Microsoft, reboot and install it in
Safe Mode. Has not failed me yet.

Is there any truth to the thinking that SP3 does not install (or work) well
with AMD chips in PCs? I spent a helluva long time downloading the upgrade
from the Windows Update site. All worked well until the actual
installation, which hung up at approximately the 5% point. Luckily I was
able to "Cancel" the installation and now I'm back to my comfortable SP2.

I also downloaded the 345 MB file from Microsoft months ago. I was
intending to install that but am afraid that during installation on my AMD
processor system I may not be able to "cancel" as easily, and get stuck with
a very large metal brick.

Comments? Thanks.

Continual reboots or can only boot into Safe Mode after installing WinXP
SP3?

See
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jes...ed-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx
[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
(WinXP SP3)."]

Possible workaround: Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to
INTELPMM.OLD.

There is one patch you have to apply before running the SP3 installer
on an Athlon but not the old Athlon XP CPUs and it *primarily" affects
only HP users. The patch that fixes the issues is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953356
It must be installed before SP3 gets installed.
