SP3 - Computer won't wake.

Old Man River

We have tried installing SP3 on my wife's Dell Dimension E520 and after
installation the machine won't wake from sleep properly.

Went through a long discussion with MS Suport, via email, in which a load of
things were tried but eventualy the problem was "resolved" by uninstalling
SP3.

We were left thinking "Ughh!!! Where do we go from here?" The machine keeps
trying to get us to install it, we're worried that we are running a system
with security flaws and yet the fix makes the machine unreliable - having to
do a hard reboot because it's gone to sleep and won't wake is unacceptable.

Does anyone have any idea how we can resolve this?

Well, you have two choices:
1) Use the "Blocker Tool Kit" to stop SP3 from being installed.
How to prevent SP3 from being installed on your PC
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...7A-5267-4BD6-87D0-E2A72099EDB7&displaylang=en
(Works for 1 year from date SP3 was released)

2)) Turn off "Hibernation/Sleep mode" and install SP3.
It's possible that if you turn off hibernation and then install SP3
it may work as expected after SP3 is installed. If it still fails
then you should keep hibernation turned off.
If you decide to try this then read the rest "all"
of the information I have provided below.

Also if I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the
file and not use Automatic Updates. More on how to get this
file below.

Where to download the SP3 installation file:
(File is large but will only install components that your PC requires)

Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not
install on XP Gold.

I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior
to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems.
Don't have any Image Backup software:
Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available)

Thanks for your helpful advice.

We were rather hoping that someone might have a suggestion which would fix
the problem so that the machine would run properly after the installation of
SP3. Perhaps we need to pursue Dell support.
