How do I know whether I have SP2 with my Windows XP. I sometimes
download the updates, but is there a place to find out if I have it or
not.

It will not automatically install. It will not be installed without your
knowledge. You have to click the buttons and follow the steps to install it.
Anyway, you can find the current version by :

Right click My computer
Properties
Under System column, it will tell you about the version of SP (if installed)

SP2 is pretty major - not something that was done without your knowledge -
if the system did not come with it or if someone else did not do it for you.

Start button --> RUN --> winver --> OK

Should read something like:
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 : Service Pack 2)

In other words - it should be fairly obvious there. *grin*
