installed sp2, now am showing $mft is corrupted and
unreadable, can't use system restore, can't retrieve pix,
can't run defrag. WHAT THE HELL DID IT DO?????

What you really need to ask is WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?

If you can't run restore you may try uninstalling SP2 and then run windows
update.

If you can't uninstall SP2, then I suggest downloading the IT version of SP2
and run the install. It was the only way I could fix one fouled install
because the computer registered as being updated to SP2 and would not give
me the choice to run the update again.

The whole situation was due to a power hiccup while SP2 was installing,
taking the machine down and then back up within 10 seconds. I now have all
my systems on APC battery backup UPS.
