SP2- Windows Installer Service

After I installed the SP2 update on my Windows XP Home SP1 machine, the
Windows Installer Service is always stopped when I boot my computer. I have
to manually start the service, if I want to install a program or do other
maintance jobs that uses the installer service.

I recently upgraded two machines, going through all the rutines to get the
machines ready to install, and they both hung at the cleaning up process at
the end of the installation. After booting up, one machine is fine, the
other one hung at the Windows is starting ..please wait.... screen. I had
to hard reboot, but it booted to Windows XP SP2.

Is the Windows Installer Service 'stopped' a default behavior with SP2, or
is my computer really messing up?

OK.. I found the DEP config feature. (r-click My
Computer|Properties|Advanced|Performance|Data Execution Prevention)

Does DEP have something to do with turning off Servcies as important as
Windows Installer Service?

Anyone??
