SP2 Upgrade Problem....

I have a problem that I have been battle for a couple days now. This is one
strange problem. It all stemmed when I wanted to install Windows XP Home SP2
on a Gateway 700X. Booted from the XP SP2 CD, Hit enter, Hit F8, Selected
the drive to install on went to format the drive and after 100% it states
that it cannot format the drive to try another partition. So I went through
the process another time, same thing. Stated to see if its hardware problem,
swapped the HDD, another HDD, memory, CPU, took out all unnecessary PCI
cards, changed video card, power supply, cd-rom, basically changed everything
but the main board because i don't have another socket 423 board to try.
After fiddling around, I came to discover that a XP SP1 and SP0 CD formats
and installs without a hitch using any hardware configuration I throw at it.
So i figure that I could install SP1 and then patch to SP2. Sp2 patch
installs, but after the reboot I get a 0x00000024 blue screen error. I then
go and try the array of hardware swaps but get the exact same error at the
exact same place regardless of the hardware configuration. I tried to
install SP1 the do a repair install with SP2, but SP2 CD does not find that
there is an OS installed.
According to Gateway this main board is compatible with SP2 and they only
have one situation in witch a TV Media software with a different error code
has a conflict with SP2. So the best I could do is SP1 and all the updates
current for that. I know SP1 will soon be not supported and all upcoming
updates will not come. I was wondering if anyone out there came across such
a situation and if there was a resolution outside of what I believe to be
some sort of incompatibility with SP2 and this main board. Thanks in advance.

Here are some specs for the system (keep in mind the hardware swaps):

P4-1.8
Intel 850 Chipset Main board
512 MN RDRAM
80 GB WD HDD
CD-Rom

SP2 doesnt get installed that way,you simply run it in windows explorer,SP2
is not a functioning cd,its mearly a group of updates with a tool or two
thrown

Sorry, I should have been more specific. By XP SP2 CD, I meant XP windows
installation CD streamlined with SP2.

I have solved the problem. It looks like Gateways, at least this model,
works proprietarily with Western Digital HDD. Thanks.
