SP2 upgrade has lost my display adaptors

ok here's the situation.
needed to install microsoft office 2007 on my boyfriends computer. we do not
have the interweb. brother gave me a cd with service pack 2 on it, cos 2007
wont install on sevice pack 1. here the problems begin.
install went well. too well. installed office no problems.
later that night boyfriend goes to play diablo 2. which worked before the
upgrade to SP2.
no go.
i have a poke around the computer. guess what? device manager doesn't
realise i have a display adaptor. try to correct. fail. try to install nvidia
drivers that happened to work before. fail (it thinks they have installed but
they don't make a difference). in between bouts of pulling out my hair, ring
my tech-head brother. says to rollback to SP1. ummm... how?
realise that would make office not work. go back to pulling out hair.
the card is a NVidia Geforce4 MX440.
boyfriend is really getting cranky about the problem. so without overhauling
the whole blinking thing (cos i've gone and lost the CD key), how can i get
it to work? both office 2007 and the diablo 2? and hopefully the graphics
card as well. i suppose thats implied cos if it doesn't work directx doesn't
work. which means diablo 2 doesnt work.
will post more info if needed.
please help me.

Maybe it would be worth a try to download and
install a new copy of the following driver.

The following link should be the correct driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html

Also be sure to read the installation hints:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/driver_installation_hints.html

Good luck.

didn't work. well the installl program said i dont have a compatible card to
the driver. the card DOES work. it appears in the boot sequence thingy when i
turn it on. but windows xp pro SP2 does not realise it is using it cos i use
the card to connect to my monitor.
further ideas would be helpful

thought i should post the possible solution my dad worked out.
had a chat to my dad, in a random conversation.
while updating to service pack 2, it asked for something to do with VIA.
instead of ringing my dad i called my not-as-big-a-techhead little brother.
he said not to worry about it and press cancel. turns out its a VIA Raid
computer. and the lack of installing VIA drivers is why its experiencing
problems.
apparently, VIA Raid combines two separate harddrives into one, and splits
info over both of them (this is my basic understanding). when i didn't
install the new VIA raid drivers during the install of sp2, windows forgot or
lost or lost the ability to find the info that let it recognise the fact we
have a GeForce4 MX440 graphics card, because that info was spread over the
two drives.
so dad and i are going to attempt installing the drivers, see if that fixes
it.
i'll let everyone know the final solution when we find it and know it works.
thats for the help
