Was this issue ever resolved? Unfortunately I am experiencing this issue now
with SP2. It is extremely annoying!

Thanks for any help.

I take it back - it only worked for a little while that day that after I
rebooted. I agree with the poster below that now it only works sometimes -
and hardly at that. Something is definitely wrong as again this happened
after SP2 install...

Did you reboot? It works here, so its not a direct bug - but its possible
an add-in or something is interacting with it.

I just downloaded SP2 for office - i was happy to read about the
improvements
in stability to outlook. I think I found a bug though as SP2 seems to
kill
the desktop alert feature altogether. It stopped working for me and then
I
created a new rule for it which doesn't work either. I even went into
tools
/ options and the preview desktop alert button did nothing - it's dead.

I'm still having the problem too. I upgraded to Windows 7, RC and the
problem persists. I've tried every suggestion in this forum and at
best, I've gotten a couple hours of functionality.

It was never resolved. And guess what? It happens in OL2010 as well.

Not sure if it was mentioned up the thread, but one thing that helps is
ensuring you don't have any extraneous Outlook add-ins installed. Apparently
one from Apple can contribute to the problem. In my case, it still didn't
fix the problem, but some days I don't have to restart Outlook at all
(that's called getting lucky), while other days I only have to restart it
once. Before I'd have to restart it multiple times on most days.

Same for me. Upgraded from Office 2007 SP2 to 2010 and exactly the same
issues with exactly the same symptoms and temporary solutions. Don't know if
this would occur with a clean install.

I would expect issues with Outlook 2010, since it's not the final product yet.

Desktop Alerts issue in Outlook 2007 Sp2

I first did a clean install of MS Home Office and Outlook 2007 on my Laptop . My Operating system is Windows XP Sp3 Professional. After that i had some regular windows updates and therefore i now have Outlook 2007 Sp2 on my laptop.

I am using IMAP to sync my gmail account ((e-mail address removed)) with Outlook .I therefore had set up the following under the 'Rule and Alerts' :

Apply this rule after messages arrives through the (e-mail address removed)
account and on this machine only play chimes.wav and display a desktop
Alert.

Now this is what i observe:

1) When i open outlook and click on 'Preview' under 'Desktop Alert Settings' i see a preview implying Desktop alerts are working. Now if i send a Test mail from my gmail account (opened in browser) to myself i see the Desktop Alert with the chimes sound as dictated by the rule above.

2) If i close and open Outlook again and send a Test mail from my gmail account (opened in a browser) to myself i do not get the Desktop Alert but i do hear the chimes sound. If i go back to Outlook and click 'Preview' , i do not see any preview. If i close outlook and repeat step 1 i start seeing desktop alerts for the next received mails.

So essentially in order to get the Desktop Alerts i need to click on 'Preview' under 'Desktop Alert Settings' each time i open outlook after closing it.

So here is how things stand as of now.I contacted the Tech Support person from MS who could not resolve my problem with Desktop Alerts in Outlook 2007 SP2.Instead he suggested i set a rule for a New Item Alert instead of Desktop Alert as follows:

Apply this rule after messages arrives through the (e-mail address removed)
account and on this machine only play chimes.wav and display New Mail in the New Item Alert Window.

The above surely works but this rule is for New item alert and not a Desktop Alert .

THERE IS SURELY A DESKTOP ALERTS BUG in OUTLOOK 2007 SP2. Also when i try the same thing with Outlook 2003 Sp3 i get all desktop alerts as dictated by the rule i have set.

Does anyone agree that this is what they too are facing? As of today (April 27th,2010) the issue is still unresolved by MS.I wonder if it will ever get resolved? Also in all the cases i had customized my Desktop alert to be 10% transparent and 20 seconds long.
