SP2 Security Centre Loses Settings

I have installed SP2 and set the Windows Firewall "off" as
I have Sygate Pro installed. I have set the security
centre not to monitor the firewall and have also set it
not to alert me about the firewall being off. However
every 3 or 4 reboots it forgets these settings and starts
to nag me about the firewall being turned off!

Anybody else seeing these symptoms or know what the
problem is.

TIA

Hi

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way Security
Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

If that doesn't stick when you reboot, you can do the following:

Someone in another newsgroup thread indicated that a Symantec service
was the cause for this behavior on his computer (I can't remember in
what newsgroup though).

To "solve" this problem, you can disable the Security Center service:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)

06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Thanks I have tried "Change the way the security centre
notifies me" but will look at you other suggestions as I
do have Symantec Norton AV.

Cheers

I had that and turned off Windows firewall in services.
That cured it.

Nothin to do with Norton, it's to do with windows firewall in services.
Turn it off and then you not get the"re setting itself"
I had the same problem and now I do not after doing what I said above

Hi

Is this a computer that is joined to a domain?

From a previous post by me:

If the computer is member of a domain, the Security Center is
default disabled, and you will see this entry in the Application
event log (Source: SecurityCenter, Event ID: 1807):

"The Security Center service has been stopped. It was prevented
from running by a software group policy."

For a domain computer, this is normal and by design, the Security
Center is default turned off (and you will get the message mentioned
above in the event log). There is a Group Policy setting available
if you want to turn it on (domain wide or just for your computer
using Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

Me too. The only way to turn off the alert was to change the
setting in Services. Clearly a software bug.
